Albuquerque and Bernalillo County sit right next to the 1st Urban Wildlife Refuge called Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge. Valle de Oro is located on 2nd street in the South Valley of the Albuquerque Rio Grande Valley. Valle de Oro features over 560 acres of land and over dozen kinds of birds and wildlife.
Lands include the 560 acres of land located in the South Valley of Albuquerque. Valle de Oro is located right next to the Bosque and Rio Grande. The Bosque and Rio Grande are within a step away from the wildlife refuge.
Wildlife includes the Sandhill Cranes, both lesser and greater, which appear during the cool months of October through March. Some birds include roadrunners and woodpeckers fly across the Valle de Oro landscape and continue through the Bosque.
Next, Coyotes constantly roam the wildlife refuge all seasons of the year. You may find yourself walking on a breezy summer day and see a few coyotes walking around. Right inside the Bosque and Rio Grande land areas, make sure to walk over to the shoreline of the river and take a glimpse into small water life. They are frogs the size of a U.S. quarter and colorful dragon flies too.
The mission of the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge includes creating events to promote community and to share in the urban setting of Albuquerque. The wildlife refuge is is 5 years old. This wildlife refuge offers educational programs and community outreach.

Valle de Oro partners up with their Friends of Valle de Oro, this is their Friends Group, which allows community members to become Friends and actually commit to helping the wildlife refuge. The opportunities as a member of the Friends Group include writing grants, attending public forums and meetings, helping with outreach and activities, and there is many more activities that the Friends Group help with.
Valle de Oro offers many great, fun, free, and family friendly events throughout the entire year. Valle de Oro hosts its large annual Birthday Party during September. The Birthday Party includes local and community organizations that table and provide fun activities for children and free information for adults. There is music performed by local Albuquerque bands and musicians. Be sure to attend the Birthday Party.
Another great event includes the monthly Birds & Breakfast event. The wild life refuge offers a few foods for a breakfast, and the Biologist and Education Specialists provide tours of the wildlife refuge to see the wildlife and learn about the history.
Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge is continuing to develop important relations and partnerships across the Albuquerque region. They partner up for large scale events and do outreach at Albuquerque venues such as the Albuquerque Bio Park.
